French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the plan and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French police have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police representative states officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
