A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
